First Regional Competition in Financial Literacy
In April 2014, the first regional competition in financial literacy among the pupils of general secondary education establishments was held in Brest.
Close upon 800 pupils representing 10th and 11th forms of the general secondary education establishments, gymnasiums, and colleges took part in the first stage of the competition (April 16, 2014), which was carried out in all districts and towns of Brest region (21 sites). The first audition comprised 17 tests, with the maximum amount of points (in case of the right answers to all questions) being 45.
Experts of the organizational units of the JSC “JSSB Belarusbank”, which were members of the judging panel, prepared assignments, and were responsible for their delivery to the competition sites and keeping them in a confidential manner, were actively involved in carrying out the competition in the districts.
The second stage of the competition was held among the winners of the first stage of the competition – two representatives of each district (town) and regional college. The winners of the first stage were the top scores, with their amount of points exceeding 50% of the maximum amount of points. Each winner of the district stage of the competition was awarded a souvenir medal on behalf of JSC “JSSB Belarusbank”.
39 pupils (winners of the first stage) took part in the second (regional) stage of the competition. The competition included 16 assignments covering different areas of banking, with the maximum amount of points being 56.
A formal opening ceremony was held before the start of the first regional competition in financial literacy. Sergei Dubkov, Deputy Chairman of the Board of the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus, and Aleksandr Zhuk, Deputy Head of the Education Department of Brest Region Executive Committee welcomed the participants.
The competitors fulfilled the assignments during an academic hour. The jury which comprised experts of Brest Region Main Department of the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus, JSC “JSSB Belarusbank”, and Regional Education Department assessed the results. The results of the competition confirmed a rather high level of the pupils’ knowledge: all competitors outscored half of all possible points; five of them got 48 points. The winner of the completion was Dmitry Usnarsky, School No. 33 (11th form) of the city of Brest, who got 54 out of 56 (maximum possible) points. Due to the fact that two participants got 49 points the jury decided not to award the prize for the third place. Representatives of the city of Brest Dianna Gavva (Secondary School No. 18) and Maria Volskaya (Gymnasium No. 2) were ranked second.
During the official awarding ceremony a lot of warm words was said to the winners and participants of the first regional competition in financial literacy. All participants obtained the gift bags with the souvenirs of the National Bank, JSC “JSSB Belarusbank”, and OJSC HCBank. The winners of the competition were awarded Certificates of Merit of the Education Department of Brest Region Executive Committee and valuable gifts of the National Bank and OJSC HCBank (tablet PC, e-book, and mobile phone) which were presented by Sergei Dubkov, Deputy Chairman of the Board of the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus.
Summing-up the results of the competition it is worth mentioning a great interest of the competitors and organizers in its theme. In connection with the aforesaid, it was proposed to assign to this event a republic-wide status and hold it annually.
